Mystery explained of no heart disease despite having high cholesterol food, smoking and overweight– Roseto Effect

A few months back, I was reading a book called outliers written by Malcolm Gladwell, a great writer of  nonfiction. I came across the term Roseto effect in his book which was an exciting feature, and therefore I felt like sharing it with you all.  So I googled to gain more knowledge about the Roseto effect, and I gathered information from Wikipediamedium.com, Huffington Post and a few YouTube channels. What I came to know about this effect was so exciting and also essential that I recommend everyone to read this till the end.

Here is the explanation:

Roseto is a town in the Pennsylvania region of America, where immigrants from Southern Italy settled there in 1880. The people of Roseto were able to protect their traditions and Lifestyle from their old country. In the year 1950 Roseto gained popularity when it was reported that the death rate due to heart disease was dramatically lower than in neighbouring towns of America.

In the year 1961, a doctor called Dr Stewart Wolf,  then head of Medicine of the University of Oklahoma discussed with a doctor from the Roseto about the unusually low rate of a heart attack in that area. They had a lengthy discussion about the living standards of various places in America and the doctor so and so was surprised to know that in the Roseto region people had no heart disease for so many years despite having heavy smoking, drinking, eating fatty foods and no exercises. They were enjoying quite a healthy heart.

This information made the doctors from America so curious to know about the reason for this phenomenon that a couple of doctors from different regions of America teamed up and visited the place. They interviewed every citizen over there and collected the data and history about their living style, their diet and their philosophy about life and everything else.

The research took about three-four years and came out with an astonishing analysis. They named that analysis the Roseto effect.

According to the research report, the unique features of the Roseto people can be explained as follows:

1) Roseto people believed in close-knit Family Life. They lived in joint families. Many generations lived in one house. They took care of their own family. It was not that they did not quarrel with each other. The fact is that they fought like cats and dogs. Still, they lived in the same home lovingly.  People were free to express their feelings and opinions irrespective of their age and status in the family. They had freedom of expression and let go of unpleasant things from their lives. They did not believe in pride, stubbornness, and a rebellious attitude.

As the saying goes “A false peace is worse than war.”

True peace can be achieved when everyone is treated equally, and there is no place for ego and stubbornness.

2) Roseto people were religious, and they went to church regularly. They cared for the neighbours and looked after each other in case of problems.

3) Roseto people believed in community living. People felt in an active community living from my social economics view. There was no distinction between rich and poor people. They did not distinguish people according to their wealth. They lived like brothers and sisters in a community. Whenever one person needed help, all Rosetans were ready to help him. There was no place for loneliness and isolation in society. People got married within the community.

4) Roseto people never worried about day-to-day problems because they believed that whenever there is a problem family or community will always be there to help them. The crime was not there at all. In the village people used to keep their doors open, they did not lock their homes.

They believed that all they needed was a safe home, enough food and loving relationships to stay happy in life.

After knowing about the Roseto people, everyone would wish that the story would always go on like this always. But unfortunately, this did not happen . After 1960 the American way of life infiltered Rosato, and they started marrying outside their communities, the family started splitting, religion was no longer followed by the people, and materialism and the need for wealth were in full swing. People migrated to various other places in America to study and work. Roseto was no longer the same as before.

After a couple of years, Roseto was not a different town, then the neighbouring towns and heart diseases became the same as everywhere else. It was sad.

What we can learn from the Roseto effect:

What we can learn from the Roseto effect is that living in a close-knit community and family life, spirituality and a stress-free lifestyle can protect us from the risk of heart attacks. We cannot excuse ourselves from eating unhealthy foods, smoking and not exercising as the Rosatans used to do, but we should adopt a healthy lifestyle. We need to make some conscious efforts to be more social, avoid day-to-day stresses by improving our work styles, be with nature for some time, and follow healthy lifestyles.

Last but not least We must understand the real meaning of freedom of expression. Our homes, communities, nations and the world will attain peace if we give freedom of speech to everyone by eliminating the ego, stubbornness, and rebellious attitude from within.
